THIRD GRADE CONTINUES TO SOAR!
DURING READING WORKSHOP, students have been reading planned assignments for their character study books in school and at home. They have been focusing on adding their own thoughts about what they’re reading and engaging in book talks to push their thinking. As students read, they will keep track of character traits to help get to know the main characters as if they were a student in their grade.
IN SOCIAL STUDIES, students have been exploring life long ago and today. They began the unit with The Cooper Mill Field Trip and the Mendham Walk. They have enjoyed learning more about Mendham history and how things like transportation, communication, and the environment have changed over time.
IN THEIR CURRENT WRITING UNIT, third graders are crafting personal narratives. Students are working their way through the writing process - planning, drafting, revising, editing, and finally publishing. Students are using mentor texts to learn about a variety of writer’s craft that they can incorporate to make their own writing unique and interesting.
THE THIRD GRADE MATHEMATICIANS are finishing up learning the foundations of multiplication and division through equal groups, fact families, arrays, and multi-step number stories. Come November, the third graders will continue to learn strategies to further develop their multiplication and division skills to become more fluent mathematicians.
IN SCIENCE… THIRD GRADERS will be tackling their first unit in science. They will become excellent and precise scientists by observing the world around them, asking concrete questions, executing investigations, collecting and analyzing data, and concluding answers about water and climate. Third Graders will be learning about weather patterns, the Earth’s water, properties of water, and the water cycle. After the Water and Climate unit, they will move on to the Structures of Life unit!
