From Halloween Trash to Halloween Treasure

"How much waste does Halloween produce?"  Mr. Gurczeski's 6th grade Scientists set out to not only answer that question but create seasonal decorations using recycled materials.

Students began by reading a recent article of the same title, where they learned that almost 7 million Halloween costumes, which are primarily made of oil-based plastics, are thrown out every year, the equivalent of 83 million bottles.  Students also learned about waste produced by pumpkins, individually wrapped candy, and party decor.

With that research in mind, students set out to use every bit of "trash" collected to create their decorations and reduce their footprint on the environment.
